take me back tuesday: the beginning of flash's soccer career and broken arms

so consensus has it i should do a vlog.  i hereby make a promise to you all and my bffff, squeaky, a vlog will be coming your way soon.  well, maybe soon.  depends on how you define "soon."  point is it will be happening.

now on to the whole reason why we all love tuesdays so much... the two pics below are near and dear to my heart and remind me of my early beginning at a long soccer career.

here's 8 year old (flash) on her first ever legitimate soccer team, the hotshots.  we were pink and blue because our team was made up of a bunch of very girlie girls and pink was THE color of the day.  who would have ever thought that from such humble beginnings, most of the girls i played with would go on to play division 1 college soccer and a few of which play professionally worldwide to this day.  now on to the important stuff - let me address my hair, beaver teeth, and broken arm.  until about age 8, i had rapunzel long hair.  i somehow got the brilliant idea to chop it all off and donate it to locks of love.  (i'm a giver like that.)  i also cut my own bangs.  obvs.  the teeth.  oh my gaaaawsh, the teeth.  i assume (seriously hope), we all had beaver-like teeth at some point or another.  (thank you for orthodontists and braces.)  the arm - this was my second broken arm.  by age 8, i had managed to break my left arm twice.  by age 14, i had managed to break my left arm not twice, but six times.  and i'm not talking little hairline fractions, i'm talking compound, clean breaks, some required screws.  for some reason upper body strength was never my strong suit, it seems.  wearing pink and being a little badass center-midfielder, on the other hand, was.

i hesitated even putting this picture up because it's hideous.  so feel free to point and laugh.  this was me around age 9.  age 9-12 = my super tomboy days.  hence the disgusting kate gosslin haircut.  i'm pretty sure kate got a tip out of my book and this was the haircut that inspired her own notorious wedge 'do.  same soccer team, but now instead of pink and blue, we graduated to red and blue.  less girlie, you know.  age 8, pink was cool, but now that i was 9, i would not be caught dead wearing pink.  i just now noticed the rolled up sleeves.  for some reason, i couldn't stand sleeves.  i still can't.  i always have to tuck my jersey and shorts up.  i swear i envy volleyball players in the spanky shorts and sleeveless tops.  if it were soccer protocol to wear stuff like that, i totally would.

I had almost the exact same teeth when I was those ages, except that you could have driven a cement truck through the center of my two front ones.

Thank goodness for orthodontics INDEED!

PS. Still cute no matter how hein you think you were. :)

hahaha very cute! those pictures remind me of all my sister's awkward youth soccer pictures. I love how they make all the kiddies pose the exact same way!

I love, love, love the first haircut. I swear - so did my hairstylist because he gave me the same do about 3 years ago and I cried for a long time. (but that's just because I didn't look as cute as you in it) ;-)

Awesomepants....or awesomesoccershorts. No, that word is way too long.

I may have to dig up some old tennis pics, perhaps I can find the ones from 8th grade when I had a perm. Yeah, a perm.

Are you ready for some happy time?

Haley has bucky beaver teeth AND she asked me to sign her up for soccer.

Maybe she is yours? I never had bucky teeth nor did I play soccer.

no joke i had the pink and blue jersey as my first jersey too! I was in 2nd grade. For whatever reason that color combo would haunt me as I would end up wearing it for 5 more teams. Bleh. I always wanted to be the yellow team damn't!

All the teams had to have ocean/sea related names they chose mermaids and goldfish and seahorses and nice names like that...we were the piranhas and we were undefeated thanks to our hardcore coach...which led to my soccer addiction.

Yup, I had beaver teeth too. Horrible. But my hair didn't rock nearly as much as yours :) Cute pics!

My poor cousin played college soccer and had to have surgery on her knee several times. Rough sport!

I was going to say that's why you went into soccer and not volleyball.. you kept breaking your arms, and soccer is one of the few sports you can still play with a broken arm.

But volleyball, you break your arm and you won't be wearing the uniform for awhile. No matter how good it is. Or you could wear the uniform, but you couldn't play.

I think everyone goes through the beaver stage - mostly because you lose your two front teeth and the rest happen around them - the new ones grow in and seem gigantor compared to the wee baby teeth. I looked like a hillbilly for a few years due to knocking out my front tooth on the coffee table long before it needed to come out - so I had a black hole and one beaver tooth. NICE RIGHT? The 2nd tooth finally grew in but it's higher than the other - seems I must have done some damage sliding for base (couch) during a game of tag (in the house) and slammed my face into the rock hard coffee table. I'm a bruiser I guess.

YOU are indeed a bruiser as well - I think it's awesome you sustained those injuries and kept going (not awesome you got injured mind you but that you kept on trucking with soccer). You go girl!

P.S. I cut my own bangs not once but twice in my life - these are the things that bring us together!!! oxox

My twins were notorious for breaking their arms during soccer too.

and you decided on which bikini?

Tricia said...

Okay...seriously. Do we know each other for real? Judging by the SAA sweatshirt last week, we went to the same high school. My bestie played for the Hotshots back in the day, and forced me to come watch EVERY single game.
